Psalm 42 – Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy
The Nazis referred to all music as 'entartete Musik' which, in their eyes, was morally and politically objectionable. The composers of this music had to be fought and performances made impossible. The term entartet was also used for music movements such as jazz (arrangements), atonal music and, above all, music by Jewish composers. “Nationalistic music”, presumably music with folklore-like elements and which could arouse patriotic feelings, was also suspect (such as music by Frederic Chopin or Zoltan Kodaly). All this music was banned. It was the first time in mankind that race determined whether music was good or bad.
The program is performed by the Ars Musica Wind Quintet, consisting of the five solo wind players of the Ars Musica Orchestra. The Ars Musica Orchestra is a relatively young, flexible and professional orchestra. Young in the sense of establishment (2013), young in the sense of appearance and average age. We look for adventure in the repertoire. For example, we link well-known classics to lesser-known classics, to surprising arrangements, to new music, and so on.
