Pentecost are two days off…
The Christian holidays – which express the major themes in Christian thought – are becoming increasingly detached from those themes. If you ask the average Dutch person what we celebrate at Christmas or Easter, they will soon be unable to answer. The meaning of Pentecost is no longer known at all. This while two holidays are dedicated to it and there are countless art expressions that refer to the Biblical history of Pentecost.
The live Easter event The Passion (EO - 2.8 million viewers in 2012!) shows that the general public has a real need for reflection on the background of the festivities.
Pentecost is the outpouring of the Holy Spirit
A number of Zoetermeer residents (Henk Willem van Dorp, Rev. Jaap van den Akker, Willem Vermeulen) have therefore also set up the 'Whitsun event' Foundation to organize a Whitsun event for the whole of the Netherlands on June 6, 2014, the Friday of the Whitsun weekend. Zoetermeer and surroundings. Pentecost 2014 is therefore an attempt to connect the 'old' feast of Pentecost to the here and now, and to let the eloquence of this feast speak.

On Saturday 16 May, six so-called flash mobs will be performed in various public spaces in Zoetermeer. A flash mob is performed by a (large) group of people who suddenly meet in a public place, do something surprising and then quickly fall apart again. Together, the six flash mobs form a large flash mob. People from all neighborhoods participate in these flash mobs. These flash mobs are recorded with cameras. The recordings are projected on large video screens and are part of the big performance on June 6 at the Grote Dobbe.
On Saturday evening 23 May there will be a large live event at and on the Grote Dobbe. With orchestra (Ars Musica Orkest), dancers, soloists and actors, the story of Pentecost is told and sung from the theme of recreation. Appealing lyrics and a mix of classical and light music. A mix of styles like the Night of the Proms. Soloists and actors have national fame, matching the various roles.
The national Protestant Church of the Netherlands is a partner of this event. The municipality of Zoetermeer and Floravontuur also wholeheartedly support the Pentecost event.
