Requiem Jommelli and Duruflé

October 8, 2018 @ 02:00

Maurice Duruflé's Requiem from 1947 is an arrangement of a suite of organ pieces that the composer based on Gregorian chant from the mass of the dead.
Although the work breathes the same tranquility and optimism as Fauré's Requiem – with which it shares its popularity – Duruflé's musical language is firmly anchored in the twentieth century. Much more unknown (wrongly!) is the Requiem by Niccolo Jommelli, a student of Francesco Durante. The work breathes tranquility and pure beauty.

"A beautiful, honest Matthäus Passion! Conductor Patrick van der Linden managed to combine all forces so beautifully."
