Wait up! – Holly

Apr 30, 2019 @ 02:00

On 1 and 2 November, the Zeeuws Vocaal Ensemble will perform the concert program entitled 'Wachet Auf' twice in Kapelle and Hulst respectively. The program consists of a composition of music from the baroque period up to and including the neo-baroque era. The program therefore varies enormously; from works by composers such as Schütz & Schein to Bach to Pepping, Distler and Willem Vogel. At the same time, a clear (time) line can be heard. With this programming, the Zeeuws Vocaal Ensemble once again demonstrates its commitment to music education and drawing attention to the development of classical music over the centuries.
A number of instrumentalists from Ars Musica will participate in this concert on violone, violoncello and theorbo, and (chest) organ.

Explanation from our conductor:

In 1623, as the Thirty Years' War raged, Europe was torn apart by the confrontation between Protestant and Catholic nations. Heinrich Schütz and Johann Hermann Schein, close friends with deep Lutheran faith, were thoroughly in tune with the spirit of their time when they wrote these works imbued with austerity and humility. Yet these two great minds were still driven by a burning passion, very much attached to the Italian style, with its direct madrigal-like text representations and polyphony.

The moving Nunc Dimittis (from Musikalische Exequien ) by Schütz, motets from the famous Israelis Brünnlein by Schein: they are a source of inspiration for Johann Sebastian Bach. This musical genius was for several generations - just like Schein - musical director of the Thomasschule and attached to the Thomaskirche in Leipzig as a cantor. And just as with his predecessors Schein and Schütz, the Italian influences in Bach's motet Komm , Jesu , komm (BWV 229) are clearly noticeable, even in the double choir alone.

In turn, Bach is a source of inspiration for generations of composers after him to this day. In particular, twentieth-century composers such as Hugo Distler and Ernst Pepping translate baroque principles to their own time in their works and are therefore considered to belong to the neo-baroque school. Distlers Wachet auf is a sensational choral work and can be seen as one of the absolute highlights of the a cappella choral works of the first half of the 20th century .

Reviews

"Patrick van der Linden is a very nice conductor to work with. He is very musical, and makes music in a very natural way, together with the musicians around him.
You notice that there is a good atmosphere during rehearsals and concerts, because he really seeks collaboration with his people. He also gives a lot of confidence to the musicians who work with him, which I find very pleasant."

Klaartje van Veldhoven, soprano June 16, 2022
